According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, total export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products in the first five months of 2026 is estimated at US$30.69 billion, an increase of 9.2% compared to the same period last year, while import turnover reached US$22.28 billion, an increase of 12.6%. The trade balance for the entire sector continued to show a surplus of US$8.41 billion, an increase of 1.1%.
According to information presented at a press conference on the morning of June 1st, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment stated that agricultural, forestry, and fisheries production continues to maintain positive growth momentum, contributing to ensuring a balance between domestic supply and demand and creating a foundation for achieving the sector’s growth targets in 2026.
In the agricultural sector, the area planted with winter-spring rice reached 2.98 million hectares, an increase of 0.3% compared to the same period last year. Rice production reached 13.96 million tons, a decrease of 2.4%. For the summer-autumn crop, the planted area reached 1.29 million hectares, an increase of 3%.
Livestock farming continued to develop steadily, with the total number of pigs and poultry both increasing by 3.7%. Meanwhile, the total number of buffalo decreased by 2.9% and the number of cattle decreased by 0.7%.
In the forestry sector, the area of newly planted forests reached 101.4 thousand hectares, an increase of 1.9%; the volume of harvested timber reached 8.7 million m³, an increase of 3.8% compared to the same period.
The fisheries sector recorded positive results with a total output of 3.9 million tons, an increase of 3.1%. Of this, aquaculture production reached 2.3 million tons, an increase of 5% and continued to be the main driver of growth; fishing production reached 1.6 million tons, an increase of 0.5%.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment stated that, along with boosting domestic consumption, the sector continues to strengthen trade promotion, effectively utilize free trade agreements (FTAs), expand export markets, and diversify consumption markets. As a result, the export value of agricultural, forestry, and aquatic products maintains a positive growth trend.
By product group, agricultural products achieved export turnover of 16.38 billion USD, an increase of 6.1%; forestry products reached 7.65 billion USD, an increase of 4.5%; and aquatic products reached 4.65 billion USD, an increase of 10.6%.
Notably, livestock product exports reached $308 million, an increase of 43.2%; production inputs reached $1.7 billion, a sharp increase of 83%; and salt exports reached $6.7 million, an increase of 45.8% compared to the same period last year.
In terms of markets, China continues to be Vietnam’s largest import partner for agricultural, forestry, and aquatic products, with a market share of 20.5% and a growth rate of 28.4%. The United States ranks second with a market share of 18.5%, but its value decreased by 3.6%. The European Union (EU) accounts for 11.8% of the market share, an increase of 4.2%, while Japan accounts for 6.8% and an increase of 3.5% compared to the same period in 2025.
