(TSVN) – In August and the first 8 months of 2025, Vietnam’s seafood industry continued to record positive growth in both production and export, despite many adverse fluctuations from the global economy and trade.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, aquatic product production in August remained stable, ensuring supply for domestic consumption. In the first 8 months, the total aquatic product output nationwide reached over 6.4 million tons, up 3% over the same period. Of which, aquaculture reached 3.77 million tons, up 4.8%; exploitation reached 0.32 million tons, down slightly by 1.1% due to the impact of extreme weather and increased input costs.
At the same time, seafood exports continued to grow by double digits. In the first 8 months, seafood export turnover reached 7.03 billion USD, up 11.5% over the same period in 2024, making an important contribution to the overall growth of agricultural, forestry and fishery exports.
Notably, many agricultural, forestry and fishery export markets recorded strong growth. In Europe, export value increased by 38.7%; in Africa, it doubled, reaching 100.4%. The American market especially the US continued to account for a large proportion with 20.9% of the total export value of agricultural, forestry and fishery products, up 8.1% over the same period. Japan also maintained an increase of 19.8%. China accounted for 19% of turnover, up 2.6%. These are still the three largest export markets for agricultural, forestry and fishery products of Vietnam.
This positive result was achieved in the context of global trade facing many challenges: the US-China trade tension has not yet been resolved, the US imposes a 50% reciprocal tax on Indian goods, political instability in some regions, and the impact of natural disasters and extreme weather in many countries. These factors have caused the prices of raw materials, production supplies and logistics costs to increase.
In response, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has proactively restructured the market, opened new markets such as Saudi Arabia, Brazil, some African countries and ASEAN, and promoted negotiations to adapt to the new tax policy from the US. The combination of science and technology solutions, policies and economic diplomacy helps maintain export growth momentum, while increasing the competitiveness of Vietnamese seafood.
At the regular press conference of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment held on the morning of September 4, 2025, Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien affirmed that the agricultural sector is completely confident about the export prospects this year. From now until the end of 2025, the average export of agriculture, forestry and fishery products needs to reach 5 billion USD/month, then in the remaining 4 months we will reach and exceed the export target of 65 billion USD for the whole year.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment aims to continue maintaining the industry’s growth rate at around 4% in the last 4 months of the year. In the coming time, many key tasks will be implemented, including organizing a conference on combating IUU fishing chaired by the Prime Minister, preparing to work with the 5th EC inspection delegation; promoting digital transformation and applying science and technology in aquaculture and seafood processing; supporting businesses to expand their markets, etc.
With a positive foundation from the first 8 months of the year, Vietnam’s agricultural sector is moving towards the 2025 sprint phase with the determination to maintain growth momentum, contributing significantly to socio-economic stability and affirming its export position in the global market.
