Tuna exports in 9 months: Decline in the US, acceleration in the EU and CPTPP

(TSVN) – In the first 9 months of 2025, Vietnam’s tuna exports reached 705 million USD, down slightly by 3% over the same period. Although the largest market, the US, declined, fresh and frozen tuna products still grew thanks to the push from the EU market and CPTPP countries.
According to data from the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), tuna exports are clearly differentiated. Fresh and frozen tuna products (HS code 03) continue to be the main products. This group accounts for 54% of total turnover, bringing in 383 million USD. The fillet and cut fish segment (HS code 0304) alone recorded an increase of 2% over the same period.

The total turnover decreased slightly by 3% mainly due to the US market. The US is still the largest tuna import market of Vietnam, accounting for 37% of the market share with a turnover of 261 million USD. However, this figure has decreased by 5% compared to the same period. The reason is that US importers have increased purchases since the beginning of the year to avoid reciprocal taxes, leading to a large current inventory.
In contrast to the US, exports to the EU market increased by 3%, reaching a turnover of 160 million USD. Of which, demand increased sharply in two countries: Italy (up 19%) and the Netherlands (up 37%). Notably, the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) region also increased by 9%, earning 96 million USD. The two prominent markets in this bloc are Japan (up 15%) and Canada (up 17%).
Growth in the EU and CPTPP shows that Vietnamese businesses are meeting strict import standards. These are markets with very high requirements for traceability certification. In addition, the 9-month figures also show high growth from Thailand (up 83%) and Egypt (up 146%), opening up opportunities to penetrate deeper into new markets in Southeast Asia and Africa.
