Europe loves Vietnamese steamed clams

Steamed and boiled clams were exported to the EU in the most quantity among Vietnam’s clam exports to Europe in the first half of the year.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), Vietnam’s bivalve mollusk exports to the EU in the first six months of this year reached 36.9 million USD, up 35% over the same period last year.

In the first quarter, exports of this item to the EU increased by only 11%, but in the second quarter, the turnover increased by 56% compared to the same period last year. Bivalve mollusk exports to the EU continuously grew by double digits in all months of the second quarter of this year.

In the product structure, clams account for the highest proportion, including products such as brown clams, white clams, and silk clams in boiled, steamed, and whole forms. Steamed and boiled clam products are exported to the EU the most.

According to VASEP, bivalve mollusc exports to the EU in the first half of this year grew well because these are pre-processed products, convenient during the epidemic season and have reasonable prices. Processing and exporting this item in Vietnam does not depend much on import sources.

In the first 6 months of this year, Italy, Spain and Portugal were the 3 largest markets importing bivalve mollusks from Vietnam in the EU, accounting for 21%, 17% and 12% respectively. The value reached 13 million USD, 10 million USD and 7 million USD respectively, up 19-76% over the same period in 2020.

The average export price of frozen boiled white clams size 100/120 to Portugal, Spain, and Italy is around 1.30-1.43 USD per kg; frozen boiled white clams size 120/150 to Italy have an average price of 1.37 USD per kg; frozen boiled white clams size 40/60 to Portugal and Spain have a price of 1.53-1.96 USD per kg.
